country, funk
(Sydney, nsw)
Who doesn’t want to hear what “country funk” sounds like?

Howdy, it seems like we’re Cowboy Simple.

We’re born, bred and make music in Australia, and we make music with a crew of extraordinary musicians spanning the city and beaches of Sydney to the western ranges of Oberon to the Northern Rivers of NSW.

If you care to dig around on the internet you’ll soon find that we have a past, and that the music we’ve made before is with bands like SWOOP, Professor Groove and The Booty Affair, Confection and Coastal Elite and it has spanned from pop to rock to P Funk, Yacht Rock and sexy 80’s boogie, and it shouldn’t be too hard to see that what we’re doing now is a continuation of this exploration of all the varieties of white and black music over several decades and how they intersect in beautiful ways.

We’re styling Cowboy Simple as “country funk” – although that means nothing - and yet is everything.

Here’s some other catchy phrases we've been thtrowing around to try and describe what we're doing -  countryfied funk, southern fried funk, down south disco, down home disco, southern soul, Americana v Australiana, bootscootin’ mountain funk, truck stop soul, truck stop funk, truck stop disco, outlaw soul, bushranger disco. You get the picture?

Our tunes poke around the myths of old America, stories and romances sometimes set in an idealized past where place and upbringing and lifestyle made love and life interesting and difficult, not to say that they ain’t interesting and difficult today. Freedom, love and desire, location and identity, frustration and sweet release….the great themes of music never change.

We’ve been playing a regular gig at our local pub The Carrington in Surry Hills, every second Sunday afternoon for the last 6 months or so, and if you get a chance come on down and get involved while we play tunes from artists that we love like The Band and Little Feat, the Rolling Stones, Billy Preston, The Meters and Dolly Parton, and we work up our original tunes. There’s always guest singers and musicians dropping in, there’s dogs and food and frozen margaritas and it’s a beautiful local community vibe. We hope you’ll give us a listen, and maybe hear something that connects with you. And if not, well that’s ok too, what you don’t like is just as important as what you do like!
